EVERTON WANT WILSON
Barnsley's Danny Wilson is on a three-name shortlist to replace Howard Kendall as manager of Everton, says the Daily Mirror. The Goodison Park board, who haven't given up in their bid to replace Kendall after being knocked back by Leicester's Martin O'Neill, are also reported to be lining up Manchester United No. 2 Brian Kidd and Southampton boss Dave Jones, both former Everton players. A unanimous boardroom vote decided that Kendall's third stint in charge should end after only a year, and they have been impressed with Wilson's good work at Barnsley, taking the team into the Premiership and almost beating the drop.
CHAIRMAN Peter Johnson has shown his determination to get things right at the fallen Merseyside giants by fobbing off a reported 70m buy-out by property developers. "There has to be a willing seller for a transaction to take place," he said, "and I am not prepared to sell to them or anybody.''

BLUES' BRUCE PLEA
Birmingham chairman David Gold has made a fresh plea to captain Steve Bruce to stay at St. Andrew's. The veteran defender has emerged as a strong front-runner to take over as the new manager of City's First Division rivals Sheffield United after losing out for the same job at his old club, Norwich. But Gold is hopeful that the former Manchester United stalwart will remain a Blue: ''I will do everything that I can to keep him. I see next season as a great opportunity for this club.''
BLUES manager Trevor Francis looks like deciding against accepting the two-year contract on offer from the club and signing another one-year roll-over deal instead. The former England international has been working on such a contract since joining Birmingham in May 1996 and Gold said: He seems happy with the one-year roll-over deal he was on and I expect that he will choose that again ahead of the offer of a two-year contract. I have every confidence that Trevor wants to stay on.

INTO THE VALLEY
Derby full back Chris Powell is joining Premiership newcomers Charlton. The 28-year-old, who signed from Southend in 1996 for 800,000 and has played nearly 100 games for the Rams on the left side of defence, moves to The Valley for 825,000. Manager Jim Smith has already bought Argentine defender Horacio Carbonari for a club record 2.7m and German defender Stefan Schnoor, available from Hamburg on a Bosman free transfer, is expected to officially sign for the Rams tomorrow when he returns from his honeymoon in Florida.

RANGERS' EURO PLACE SAFE
The Scottish FA have assured Rangers that they won't be thrown out of the UEFA Cup because of their links with investment company ENIC. UEFA, European football's governing body, are investigating AEK Athens and Slavia Prague, who can't play in the competition because ENIC is the majority share-holder in both clubs. But SFA chief Jim Farry has pointed out that the Rangers situation is different because the company doesn't call the shots at Ibrox.

FULHAM THINKING BIG
Fulham have continued their bid to become a 'big club' by buying a 24-acre sports ground with room for ten pitches as their new training HQ. The Second Division side have purchased the University of London Athletic Ground in Motspur Park, southwest London for 2.5m and hope to move in by January.

HOWELLS OF ANGUISH
Southampton boss Dave Jones is biting his nails waiting to hear whether out-of-contract Spurs midfielder David Howells will be moving to The Dell on a Bosman free transfer. Jones has held talks with the 30-year-old and is confident he will agree to join the South Coast club: ''We are just waiting for him to put pen to paper on the deal. It is a big career move for him, so he is entitled to take his time to think it over.''

OLD PALS' ACT AT STOKE
Allan Evans has been appointed senior coach at Stoke by his former Aston Villa boss Brian Little. He won't take up his usual role as number two to Little, because his long-time colleague has already given that job to another old mucker, Tony McAndrew. "This is a big club in the wrong division and we know there's a lot of hard work to be done," the manager said. "So it's good to have people who know how I operate in place. There's a lot of understanding between us, we've worked together at first-team level for a long time. In Tony's case, it's ever since I started in management with Darlington while Allan has worked with me for six or seven years."

ROUND-UP
Tottenham physio Tony Lenaghan has resigned after six years at White Hart Lane. ''For the past six years at Spurs, and several prior to that, my family life has been virtually non-existent,'' he said. ''I feel it is time to have a rest, recharge the batteries and spend some quality time with the family.'' New Norwich boss Bruce Rioch accepts the Canaries have their work cut out winning promotion back to the Premiership. He said: It's a good league and a very competitive league. I am not looking beyond the first fixture. Former Notts County coach John Gaunt is returning to Meadow Lane to assist Gary Brazil with the youth players. Manager Sam Allardyce said: ''It was a shame John ever left, he is such a great influence on the boys.'' Three potential new signings - a striker, a winger and a midfielder - have all had preliminary talks with Third Division Cambridge and player-boss David Preece hopes to wrap the deals up in the next few days.

PICK OF THE DAY

Scotland v Morocco, 7.30pm on BBC1 and Radio 5 Live, 8pm on Talk Radio
Could this really be the year that the Scots finally get beyond the first round of the World Cup? Or will the results conspire against them, so they lose out in a game of scissors, paper, stone at FIFA headquarters tomorrow and Norway go through instead? Scotland should do it, but
